Last month a team from the National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (NARIT) visited the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) in the UK. Starting at RAL Space, the Scientific Computing DepartmentHarwell Space Cluster and the Central Laser Facility at RAL in Oxfordshire, before heading to Chilbolton Observatory (Hampshire) and onto UK ATC in Edinburgh. Strengthening international partnerships in the field of astronomy and space science. Focusing on research, engineering satellites and telescopes, radio frequency technology and public engagement.

The workshop led to a better understanding of the unique roles of NARIT in Thailand and STFC in the UK, highlighting both the similarities and differences in how they operate. Discussions included NARIT's long-term priorities in ground-based astronomy and space science, and exploring how STFC's facilities and expertise could complement and support NARIT's development and vice versa.

This built on a trip to Thailand last year where STFC international, public engagement and technology staff were given a tour of NARIT's facilities. NARIT showcased their infrastructure, including optical and radio telescopes. Despite being a relatively young organisation, NARIT has made impressive strides in developing Thailand's astronomy sector, with a strong focus on increasing capabilities such as testing facilities.

This continued knowledge exchange yielded several positive outcomes, including the establishment of immediate connections between STFC and NARIT staff and the identification of potential areas for future collaboration, building a stronger relationship between the two organisations. Identifying synergies in priorities and supporting a better understanding of mutual capabilities that could facilitate future collaborations between the UK, Thailand and Southeast Asia.
