An apprentice working on a machine in the workshop on site at UK ATC.Job role?

Engineering Support Group Apprentice.

When did you start at STFC?

August 2021.

Summary of your job?

Overall, it's varied and very hands on and practical. A lot of what I do is make 2D into 3D, which is what I really enjoy. I'm primarily based within the workshop where I assist in making components for scientific projects and general site upgrades using manual and CNC machines. As I progress, my role will evolve with me where I will undertake work more within a technician capacity, collaborate directly with other departments, and make things independently. A large part of the apprenticeship is gaining qualifications throughout at college which from second year is mainly theory including maths and engineering principles.

Why did you choose an apprenticeship?

I was looking for a career change where I could enjoy using practical skills and ways of thinking and which allowed for development and growth. I had already used up my higher education funding and I have a family so doing an apprenticeship was very attractive as I could earn from the get-go whilst both working and learning. An apprenticeship also still gives me the opportunity to specialise into other roles upon completion due to gaining qualifications.

What have been the benefits?

There are numerous benefits. I feel secure and well supported professionally and personally. Being able to build up confidence and skills at a comfortable pace. One of the biggest draws is being able to earn whilst you have a varied job and gain qualifications.

Why would you recommend it to others?

I would definitely recommend it to anyone for a range of reasons. If you're very young with no working experience it can provide a safe and well-rounded experience for you to grow into and pick up different skills. For anyone a bit older or with family commitments it is a great way to do something you enjoy, learn new skills and apply your existing ones while maintaining a good work-life balance compared to say education and a part-time job on top.

Why work as an apprentice at STFC?

STFC is a great place to work as the nature of the work is very interesting and exciting. The diverse projects and national scale allow for many opportunities unique to STFC of which everyone is included in.  It's nice being involved across the site and taking part in different things going on as well as opportunities to learn more about the scientific ideas and application side of things. The other week I got to experience the planetarium and explore the constellations which was fun and something different.

What has been your proudest moment as an apprentice?

In 2023 I won the Impact Award at the Daresbury Laboratory and UK ATC Apprenticeship Awards which was completely unexpected.
